What is Acupuncture?

Acupuncture is a system of medicine originally developed in China over 5000 years ago that uses the insertion of very fine needles into the body to stimulate areas called acupuncture points.

Approximately 365 acupuncture points exist on the body along energetic pathways termed meridians.  These meridians correspond to the energetic functions of the organs.

There are also approximately 360 “extra points” which are known and classified acupuncture points without a meridian association and an infinite number of what are termed ashi points which are points usually associated with a local pain pattern.

While acupuncture appears to be one system of medicine, historically it was many individual family systems passed from father to son.  As a result there are many styles and theories associated with acupuncture.

Acupuncture as it is taught now is actually a meshing of many of these family traditions.

Acupuncture was originally used as a surgical technique, today it still fits the legal definition of surgery.

Acupuncturists are highly skilled, highly trained specialists in this field, with over 3000 hours of training.
